The Colorado Rockies pitcher has had a long road to the bigs, but is proving the Major Leagues is where he belongs

Scott Oberg's Major League journey began in 2012 when he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round of the MLB draft. The road to professional baseball had already been bumpy for the former Tewksbury standout, which included Tommy John surgery while attending the University of Connecticut.

Oberg's throwing shoulder would require more surgery during his time in Double-A in 2014, but the determined Oberg would not be deterred from reaching the top of the Major League mountain. Last season he enjoyed his best stint in the bigs with the Rockies, who reached the postseason behind the strong bullpen work of Oberg. Scott picked up the win last season in the longest postseason game in Wrigley Field history, striking out four Cubs in a row to send Chicago packing in the National League Wildcard series. Tewksbury Youth Baseball caught up with the hard-throwing Oberg to ask him a few questions about getting to the bigs, and how TYB has impacted his journey to Major League Baseball.

TYB: It must have been an amazing journey to the Bigs. Is it sometimes still unbelievable?

Scott Oberg: Yes it is still unbelievable to me that I have been able to get to where I am, and overcome all the obstacles that have popped up along the way. But having great coaches and a great support system around me has made all the difference.

If a TYB athlete had Major League dreams, what is one piece of advice you would give them?

Oberg: The advice I would give is to never give up on your dreams, no matter what they are. And be willing to do the things others won't do to get to where you want to be.

What do you miss most about Tewksbury?

Oberg: I miss being able to see my parents and friends on a regular basis, but I know they are all supportive of me in what I am doing.

Is your family still in Tewksbury?

Oberg: Yes, my parents still live in Tewksbury.

How often do you get to come back, and when you do, where is the first place you go besides home?

Oberg: I usually am able to come back a couple of times a year to visit.  I enjoy taking my wife to a lot of the restaurants and fields I used to play at as a kid.

Have you seen the new high school?

Oberg: I have seen the new high school. It's an amazing facility and offers vast opportunities to students who are lucky enough to attend school there.

Which Majors team did you play for in TYB and who was your coach?

Oberg: When I was 9, I played for the White Sox for Frank Ferriero. 10-12 I played for the A's for Joe Andreoli and for my father, Royd. Then I played for the Marlins under Bob Henry when we moved up to the 90-foot diamond.

Do you have a favorite moment while playing in TYB?

Oberg: Playing travel all-stars and representing the Tewksbury American team was always something I really enjoyed. Traveling the valley and playing with the same group of guys from the time I was 9 all the way through High School.

Try and remember the very first lesson you were taught that you still carry with you today.

Oberg: I remember doing a lot of lessons throughout my time as a kid, but I always hear the lessons about the game that my parents instilled in me. "Have fun, play smart, and respect the game."

What is your favorite playlist (Spotify/Pandora/Apple/etc.?)

Oberg: I am always on Spotify.

Do you have any weird superstitions?

Oberg: No superstitions, but I have a pretty rigid routine to get myself ready both physically and mentally before every game.

If you could pitch to any Major League player, past or present, who would it be?

Oberg: I would have loved to have pitched to Tony Gwynn, David Ortiz, and Barry Bonds.

Describe what it's like to be a professional baseball player.

Oberg: To me, it's always an honor and a privilege to be a professional baseball player and put on the uniform everyday.
